about mellisa
A lifelong musician, I grew up studying piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada and completed the prestigious Level 10 certification. With a rich and profound teaching lineage dating back to Beethoven, I was lucky enough to learn both classical and improvisational styles, which greatly influenced my own songwriting journey and playing music in church.
With extensive theory training, I am skilled in musical composition, harmonization and song style/structure. I first started teaching piano when I was 15 years old, and have been teaching/sharing in some capacity ever since.
Over the years, I have taught myself to play a variety of instruments and have always found my way back to singing and songwriting. A few years ago I started treating my voice like an instrument - if I want to improve, I will have to learn and practice new skills! This has led to tremendous growth and flexibility as a vocalist.
I love to collaborate with other musicians and explore until we “find the pocket”. There is nothing I love more than afternoon jam sessions, spontaneous karaoke nights, or singalongs around the fire.
I grew up on a farm in northern Canada, and as the oldest of 10 kids, I learned how to work hard, lean on others and enjoy the simple life. I live in South Austin with my teenage son Aiden and 7 year old daughter Etney.
